Els Captcha són uns programes que serveixen per distingir els humans dels bots informàtics. És la típica foto que hi acostuma a haver en una web per enviar un missatge o per registrar-se, on tu has d’escriure el que veus a la imatge en un formulari.
Hi hagut algú que se li ha acudit que això es podria utilitzar per aquelles paraules d’un document escanejat que un programa OCR (són els programes que interpreten les lletres d’una imatge i les converteixen en text) no pot reconèixer, i així ha nascut el reCAPTCHA. És una manera d’aprofitar les hores malgastades en els programes de CAPTCHA:
